Divining Guidance: Tales from a Life of Dowsing & Insight Kindle Edition
Divining Guidance: Tales From a Life of Dowsing & Insight is the second book by master dowser and international animal communicator, Bill Northern. With rustic storytelling, the book chronicles small town life in the Northern Neck of Virginia after the Depression and World War II as Bill spins colorful tales of a childhood of mischief, and a loss so significant, it sparked his interest in communication and metaphysics at only seven years old.
Divining Guidance highlights Bill's early work life in Washington D.C. and hilariously documents his return home to Warsaw, Virginia, where he picked up with lifelong friends and ran a company of his own. After a municipal work crew inadvertently introduced him to dowsing, the ancient art of divining water, he went on to develop his insight and skills at places such as The Ozark Research Institute where he studied with the renowned Harold McCoy. With his ever-helpful “Angels,” Bill’s career bloomed as he traveled to legendary horse racing communities.
Bill and his Angels always emphasize the importance of good intent. So it's his aim to show readers they too can be dowsers and healers if they want. Divining Guidance: Tales From a Life of Dowsing & Insight is entertaining, sometimes educational, and thoroughly warm and inspiring.
It features historical photographs as well as photographs of some of Bill's human and four-legged clients around the world. It also includes interviews with dowsing and healing experts for readers who want to deepen their own insight.
And as a special gift, Divining Guidance offers introductory chapters of Bill's debut book, That Yank With The Crystal, which remains a strong seller in Folklore.

THAT YANK WITH THE CRYSTAL
About That Yank With the Crystal, Bill says, “The purpose of this book is to let everyone know that they too, if they are willing to practice, can become dowsers and animal communicators."
Dowsing is a procedure for finding water, minerals, or any invisible phenomena. Both animal communication and dowsing have been practiced across cultures and eras, but by few better than Bill Northern. He's been featured on TV shows and in major newspapers in the U.S. and overseas.
“Yank” is a term for a person who's American, and as Bill's reputation grew in New Zealand, locals commonly asked, “Where's that Yank with the crystal?” in hopes of watching him use a pendulum to dowse.
Bill owned Wardico, Inc., a janitorial supply company in Warsaw, Virginia, that serviced the region for many years. It was during a plumbing repair at Wardico where Bill first saw town workers use dowsing rods. After a visit to the local library, his journey was set.
That Yank With the Crystal weaves homespun tales of lost animals found, racehorses healed, Hawaiian royalty, and high-jinks in New Zealand. It features a real life cast of local people and prize-winning racehorses and figures in horse racing as it visits legendary locales such as Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky, and Coolmore, Ireland, the world's largest thoroughbred breeder.
It also includes tips and wisdom on animal communicating and of dowsing.
Dowsing and animal communication often encounter resistance and misunderstanding. Bill tells some of these stories and candidly presents scenes where veterinarians refuse his help.
Yet there are plenty of encounters in which people new to dowsing, including veterinarians and trainers, witness Bill's work and walk away as believers, often returning to study with him. Bill donated profits from the first pressing of That Yank With the Crystal to the Richmond County Museum in Warsaw, Virginia.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2024Disclosure: I met Bill about 20 years ago and took his dousing class. This is a lovely book explaining the history of his early life and how he eventually learned to douse and communicate with animals. There are many great stories of his success in helping animals be found or get better. It's an easy read and a delightful story.
