J.A. Nielsen has always been surrounded by books. In elementary school, her dad gave her a two-book required reading list: The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien and The Once and Future King by T.H. White. Once she got a library card, she had free range. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett was the first novel she read twice. She blames The Great Brain series by John D. Fitzgerald for her inability to go to sleep without reading.

She holds an M.Ed. and an M.A. in Counseling and has had various careers in education. She spends most of her time writing, but can still be found teaching art, shelving library books, and choreographing school musicals. In all endeavors, she is driven by stories.

Her story has led her to live all over —from a tropical island to the shadow of a crumbling Rhineland castle. But, the Pacific NW is always home. When not writing, she is often in the forest, on the water, or in the mountains. She still can’t go to sleep without reading.

The Claiming is her first novel.

A Whimsical Read!

A Whimsical Read!
I adore reading fantasy, so escaping to The Vail in J.A. Nielsen’s YA Fantasy, The Claiming, was a pleasure. But the characters! Dewy and Spence, a faerie princess and a human-mage, muddled with distinct personalities and magical mishaps, make this story especially charming. The chapters are short, the POV’s many, though also interesting and manageable, make every cause and effect—after effect—after effect quite the journey for Dewy and Spence to set things right.Nielsen’s worldbuilding is spectacular from the marsh grasses under the town bridge to the battlefield to the Winter Court! This is surely a sweet and enchanting read, with all the emotions and feels, and I cannot wait to get my hands on book two, coming soon! This book would be excellent for any age, middle grade and up! It would make a lovely gift for someone who likes magic, intrigue, and adventure. The Claiming is a sweet and whimsical read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Impossible to put down
Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2023
We just received the book last night and our daughter has not been able to put it down. She says it’s really exciting, unpredictable in a good way and hard to put down. She loves reading and has said this is a very good book.
