Wanda Fischer began writing seriously when she was in the second grade.

She has loved baseball since she was nearly eight years old. At one point in her life, she aspired to become a sportswriter; however, in the mid-to-late 1960s, that avenue was difficult for women to pursue. After retiring from a 40-year career in public relations/marketing/media relations, she parlayed her love of America's pastime into her first novel, "Empty Seats," which is not necessarily about her favorite team, the Boston Red Sox.

Since that her debut novel appeared, she has released a second book, "A Few Bumps," along with several short stories, all of which are available on Amazon.

When not writing or watching baseball, she's listening to folk music for her show, "The Hudson River Sampler," on WAMC-FM, the Albany, New York National Public Radio affiliate--a program she's done since September 1982. In February 2019, the Folk Alliance International inducted her into its Folk Music DJ Hall of Fame. The Proctors Collaborative also inducted her into the local Thomas Edison Music Hall of Fame in 2023 to recognize the work she has done to promote music in New York's Capital Region.

In 2012, she auditioned to become the public address announcer for the Red Sox and made the finals for the job, but ultimately wasn't chosen. On August 5, 2012, she announced a complete game between the Red Sox and Minnesota Twins on "Vermont Day."

She and her husband Bill, a retired physician, met at a coffeehouse at Boston College in 1966 and were married in 1973. They have two grown children and six grandchildren. They live in Schenectady, New York.

"The Audition" by Wanda Adams Fischer is a short story that takes place in the 1960s when "The Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour" was a predecessor for "America's Got Talent." Like all bright-eyed participants, Jean Sullivan's dream is to be showcased in her rendition of singing "Oklahoma." Unlike many participants, she has no formal training and begins to doubt herself. How can she stand out from so many talented competitors?

Author Fisher has written a poignant short story about a young girl who dares to reach for her dream. And in doing so, she learns about the gift of friendship and support from her family, friends, and strangers. Jean is a relatable, determined character who must overcome doubts about herself and muster the courage to audition. That courage, in itself, makes her a winner.

You are pulled immediately into the story with dialogue, which carries the story to a heartfelt ending. A quote from the classic movie It's a Wonderful Life sums up the story: "Remember, no man is a failure who has friends. Thanks for the wings."

"The Audition" is recommended for readers who enjoy reading inspiring short stories about a young girl reaching for the stars and finding unexpected friendship and support from those around her.

Wanda Fischer's "The Audition" perfectly captures the nerves and dreams of a young girl singer, Jean, who auditions for a well-known television show. The constant self-questioning, comparing to others, butterflies in the stomach, assuming the worst -- all of it is so real. As someone who has participated in many auditions over the years as a singer, instrumentalist and actor, I know how nerve-wracking it is, especially when you are young like Jean -- and especially when you are a little different from the rest of the kids auditioning, as she is. But I also know how strong and resilient it makes a young person -- and in the story we see that Jean is going to be okay no matter what the outcome. She is hard working and dedicated; she has the love and support of her family; and she makes friends along the way. You don't need much else in life as you pursue your dreams. A lovely story.

I really enjoyed this micro read. It's a story set in the 1960s when a girl musters up the courage to try out for a talent show. She has a great voice but is nervous about not being good enough. Her loving dad encourages her to try anyway. In doing so, she learns a valuable lesson and makes a friend in the process.

This story was a great read, and the author did a wonderful job in pulling the reader in immediately. Though there was a distinct message of the haves and have nots, I felt the author's focus on the positive attitude of Jean was heartwarming. I won't give away what happens, but Jean's outlook on this experiences, and life in general, is a wonderful lesson for all kids. If you're looking for a quick, endearing read, I would definitely recommend this story. :-)

THE AUDITION by Wanda Adams Fischer is a short story about a seventh-grade girl who wants to try out for the Ted Mack Amateur Hour show in the early fifties. On the night before and the day of the tryouts, Jean Sullivan can't sleep and was unable to concentrate in her classes, daydreaming for most of the day.

When she arrived at the studio, her dad wasn't allowed inside and she had to enter alone. Once inside, she learned that other contestants had taken singing lessons, most wore flashy clothes and make-up, could read music, and carried sheet music. Jean and her family knew she could sing, but it was clear that she was out of her league, lost hope, and thought about leaving.

A young magician appeared, waved his wand over her head and recited some magic words. A change occurred and Jean had renewed confidence and hope. She doesn't give up, but her life will no longer be the same.

Highly recommended for all ages.

Young Jean can sing - she sings Country/Western songs to perfection. But she is determined to appear on a show she idolizes, The Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour, and to do that she will need to master something different - a show tune. This story relates how Jean achieves her goal, against the odds. In doing so, she meets a young magician, Mike, a young boy appearing on the show. I won't relate more, but the story illustrates that life lessons can be learned, and friendships forged, in any environment. Jean leaves the audition with a prize, but not the one she set out for. The writing is straightforward and colorful without frills, exactly the right tone to present the musings and strivings of a child. A good read that I highly recommend.

This is such a good story of young dreams and having family who thinks you can do anything and are there for you no matter what...

"The Audition" is a heartwarming short story set in the early 1960s. The author skillfully captures the reader's attention from the beginning, immersing them in a tale of dreams, determination, and unexpected friendships. The author's ability to develop the characters within such a short space is impressive, adding depth and richness to the story. It is through Jean's outlook on life and her experiences that the author imparts valuable lessons to young readers.

Did you ever have a dream that you could do something special? Jean has a dream and believes she has a chance to make it come true. Did you ever need a friend and have one appear, as if by magic? That happened to Jean, too. THE AUDITION teaches Jean that friends and family are more valuable than clothes or private lessons and that sometimes good friends aren’t hard to find.

It is a delightful children’s story that adults will enjoy, too. The character development is also good, which isn’t easy to accomplish in a micro-read.
