For how long can you play from behind before hope fades away?
From the opening attack of the conflict, the Royal Navy of the Inter-Planetary Commonwealth has been outnumbered. Unlike their enemies, who had been preparing for this war for years, the Commonwealth was caught flat-footed. Given enough time, the economic strength of the Commonwealth should prevail, but their enemies attack relentlessly.
The Royal Navy hopes not for victory, but for survival. Hampered by the near-complete failure of their intelligence agencies, time and again they are pushed to the very brink. Innovative approaches and the heroic sacrifices of ships and crews prevent disaster.
Every time it seems as though the Royal Navy might be able to reach parity, the aggression of their enemies pushes the goal out of reach. The daunting cost of men and material keeps climbing. Yet, in the midst of this savage conflict, the relationship between Perseverance and Saint John Powell deepens.
Just as the Royal Navy introduces a technological wrinkle that gives them a much-needed advantage, their enemies introduce a new type of warship. Bigger and more heavily armed than any vessels before, these battleships have the potential to blast through the Commonwealth's defenses. It will take every bit of the Royal Navy's (and Perseverance's) grit and ingenuity to stave off defeat.
Just when the Royal Navy thinks it has weathered the storm, another tempest brews. Saint John Powell is standing in the way of an enemy force twice his strength. The best he and his people can do is slow the enemy and cause as much damage as possible before they themselves are destroyed.
How many times can you cheat death before the odds catch up to you?

From a slow start to this series it has continued with great storyline and character development. I am truly looking forward to seeing what’s next. Even moments when you think you know where it is going, the story keeps you wondering and reading.

This is an enjoyable read. Good character development and back story. Reasonably believable technology. Author develops an emotional bond between readers and the characters.

I enjoyed the personal stories of the principal figures. The description of the weaponry and tactics was exciting. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

So this book is OK. Its not bad by any means, but it never rises to the heights of its authors imagination. The problems falls into two categories. One, the personal interactions just feel wooden for some reason. Honestly sometimes it feels like I am reading a Y.A. whenever the main character and her boyfriend talk.

Second problem is much more annoying since it has so much potential. The space battles which is one of the cornerstones of a good military sci-fi space opera book have all the subtlety and strategy of banging two rocks together. This is fine for a battle or two, but literally every battle winds up the same exact way. I have yet to see the MC as the technical genius everyone thinks she is, when her tactics boil down to always rushing strait in, and getting most of her ships destroyed. Rinse and repeat.

Its annoying since their is so much potential. Ships in this universe have momentum, and acceleration rates is one of the biggest differentiators between the two sides. Why rush in with your whole fleet in a death ride every few chapters? If they are outgunned, then why not maneuver to the edges, try to use local numerical superiority to chip away at them before the big climactic clash? Their is precedent for this in real life navies who were outgunned.

Again, not a deal breaker and it doesn't make the book bad, but it keeps it from crossing into the great category. I actually recommend reading this if you can pick it up on sale, or if you have kindle unlimited. Though for 10 bucks your asking for David Weber money, which this book just isn't up to that quality level.

I just finished the second of these three novels and I'm afraid that the author is not going to end the war, at least not in a permanent fashion. But not because I fear he's going to want to continue the series in hopes it'll bring in more revenue. Rather a reluctance to extract from the enemy the full consequences of their actions. They started an unprovoked war and when the Commonwealth wins, they should not let their enemies get back up off the floor. World War II and how we utterly defeated the Nazis and the Japanese is the way to finish a war. What the Commonwealth should do is eliminate the ability of the 'Republic' and Federation to wage war again. Period, end of story. Try the entire leadership for war crimes and execute them. Then put their planets under military quarantine & destroy their ability to build anymore warships.

It may be a four but I am so ticked off by the cliffhanger I am not even sure I will read the next.

The author continues straight on from the events in Defence of the Commonwealth and after getting back into the big chair, Captain Andrews continues to fight the good fight against the Commonwealth’s aggressors. Losses are taken on both sides…

An excellent mix of high-level politics, development of military strategies and their counters and ship battles. Together with the unfolding of Perse’s love life and the impact of war on herself and those around her.

A solid page turner - I read it in one session - and a story I will be returning to again and again in the future.

Read this now - you won’t regret it! Very much looking forward to more in this and other series from Mr. Spearman.

This book is another great story in the series. We get to know a lot more about the lead character, and there is plenty of action. AND there's a cliffhanger ending which has me chewing my arms up to the elbows! Next instalment soon please.
