Eagle's Flight (The Chronicles of Adalmearc Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 57 ratings

The King is dead. His heir too young to rule. Who will claim the crown?

The noble houses gather to choose a new Lord Protector, sparking old rivalries. If they can't agree, civil war looms. That is if foreign kingdoms don't smell blood in the water and invade first.

Lord Vale wants to take up the mantle, spurred by his ambitious brother Konstans.

Lord Isarn likewise seeks this power. He is aided – or thwarted – by the return of his brother, the knight and war hero Athelstan, whose squire, Brand, hopes to restore his family’s fortunes no matter the cost.

Through all of this, an enigmatic traveler makes plans with jarls, scribes, and priests for his own mysterious purpose.

Only one thing is for certain: War is inevitable.

Equal parts Game of Thrones and Vikings, the series digs deep into every level of a struggle of power, from lords to serfs. From political intrigue to the bonds between family. Join the fight for the soul of Adalmearc!

Short version: Brand is a fantastic character. Read this book now!

Longer version: I read this series (and a spinoff book) on Royal Road a few years ago. After chapter one, I immediately recommended it to my father. Despite his initial skepticism about reading a web novel, he gave it a try, and soon started texting me every few days with his spellbound reactions to the deft political maneuvering, meticulously-researched pitched battles modeled off historical military campaigns, and the ever-present hint of mystery and magic. We both loved the depth and breadth of the world in Eagle's Flight, as well as the eclectic cast of characters, each of whom has clear and consistent goals, desires, and obstacles to overcome.

My dad consistently asked me why the Eagle's Flight wasn't published traditionally, since he thought it was well-written and compared favorably with anything he'd read in the genre over the last dozen years. Well, now it is available to wider audiences, and I continue to whole-heartedly recommend the story to anyone looking for an old school grand adventure shot through with warmth and courage. I'd happily rate it higher than 5 stars if I could!

This is the first of 6 books in the 'The Chronicles of Adalmearc' series, set in a high fantasy setting loosely based on the high medieval period in Northern, Central, and Southern Europe. The plot is fantastic, with many interwoven strands and characters. There is a hint of magic/supernatural and I'm curious where the author will take that in the coming books of the series. Best of all, the books are apparently all written already and will be released in regular intervals throughout this year and next, so readers won't have to wait an indeterminate amount of time to see the story come to a conclusion. There are some quality issues with the Kindle version: the subsections of the individual chapters are not delineated as they are in the print book, and it's sometimes hard to realize right away that the story has switched to a different setting, but it doesn't detract too much.

Great epic fantasy novel by a progfantasy author. Higher brow than stuff I normally read, but in a good way. Highly suggested to anyone who likes more traditional fantasy. I heard people talking about this back when it was on RR and only just got a chance to check it out - wish I did earlier!
Also, book tasted great when deep fried and added into a sandwich.

DNF'd! So much political machinations, I just couldn't get around the political machinations. I kept wanting and waiting for something to happen anything to happen as hope springs eternal, but seriously nothing happened except more politing. Maybe I'll gird my loins and try again later I actually did continue to listen as the narrator was pretty good!! But after finishing a half dozen books or so and giving this another good chance and with only 5hrs left I decided that I've got better books to read right now.

I really wanted to like this books. Fantasy medieval politics, sign me up. The formatting is what kill this story for me. There is no line breaks or demarcation between switching scenes and characters. You'll finish one paragraph and be half through the next when you notice that it's a different character. It totally breaks the flow for me and makes it too hard to enjoy the story. I would love for this to be fixed!

An incredibly well written story with in depth worldbuilding that hooks from the first page on. I found the characters to be three dimensional with interesting layers, and am planning on checking out the author's other story now.

when i first started reading this story i got sucked in, every day i would read as many chapters as i could between work and sleep. if you get even 50% of the joy i did while reading this it will have been worth the purchase.

this story will have you go from hating a character, to loving them and then hating them again over the course of the story. it leaves you wondering what will happen next for sure.

so good it was the first royalroad book series i was willing to shill out money to get the physical copies
