From BookLife - Editor's Pick -
This tense and surprising ticking-clock thriller from Zettler (author of the Joe Bradlee series) offers a riveting blend of science fiction, environmental commentary, political intrigue, and teasing romance with a woman from Elsewhere. The action revolves around Angelica, an eco-terrorist with unconventional methods, plus "jet-black hair and haunting, black-as-coal eyes," and Harlan Stone, a high-ranking federal agent tasked with preserving humanity amidst a rapidly deteriorating ecological crisis. Angelica, known for her ruthless determination, finds herself ousted from her movement, forcing her to confront the world's leading polluters as an outcast—and to face Harlan's flirty advances when she encounters him on the train to Philly. Beguiled, Harlan at first sees no connection to his current investigation into mysterious events like the possible extinction of all beef cattle.
Everything gets more complicated when Harlan discovers the involvement of an alien race, the Perigee, who see humanity as a "disease" to eliminate and demand drastic action to curb greenhouse gas emissions. Zettler crafts a complex and thought-provoking plot with the highest possible stakes: the fate of humanity and the planet, blending swift pacing with dark humor, big revelations and just enough science to sell it all. The protagonist, an amusing hero/patsy, delivers memorable lines like "You mean all this time I've been making love to an alien?" (He gets it together eventually.) Dialogue is sharply funny but convincing, and the Perigee are uniquely portrayed, their advanced technology balanced by vulnerabilities that add intrigue, as does Harlan and Angelica's welcome complexity. What's smartest in this uncommonly bright thriller, though, is Zettler's relentless pacing and mounting tension.
The Perigee's ultimatum serves as a stark reminder of the dire consequences of unchecked climate change, blending entertainment with a powerful message. While the relentless twists and detailed alien technology demand more attention from readers than most tech thrillers, Tick... Tick... Tick... offers ample rewards to those who favor genre-crossing, provocative ideas, and the unexpected.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2025Loved this book. It’s listed as Sci-Fi, but it’s much more a speculative thriller with a Carl Hiaasen sense of humor. There are no grotesque and frightening aliens, they take human form, which seems a comment on our own self-destruction. A fast-paced race against time. I definitely recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2025Best thing I’ve read since Elmore Leonard passed. It’s a highly entertaining take on the end of life on Earth, if that’s at all possible. Thought provoking, because the premise isn’t that far out there. Great read.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2025Steve Zettler’s Careless Love had me weeping with sorrow. His novel, Two For the Money, brought guffaws, fear-filled winces and a great deal of relief when the good team defeated its despicable foes. For anyone currently pondering the politics of the Panama Canal, you’ll find answers as well as double-crossing machinations. Both novels were compulsive reads, the kind where you promise yourself that you’ll indulge in just one more chapter - and then burn the midnight oil because the protagonists, antagonists, and plot twists have you hooked.
Tick… Tick… Tick has another resonant cast of highly relatable characters. This time the stakes are global – and inexorable. The author’s signature humor is in evidence, but so is a sense of impending doom as protagonist, Harlan Stone, takes on self-serving national and international politicos and literally tries to save our besieged planet. Will he succeed? The question grows in urgency. You’ll have to read Tick… Tick… Tick… to discover the denouement.
No spoiler alerts, but I wish every single climate-change denier would read this propulsive novel and wake up. The time bomb is ticking. Steve Zettler brings the laughter, but his message is deadly serious.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2025Another great read from Steve Zettler. Once the story unfolds, the pages turn themselves. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Steve has a gift for developing characters who are both interesting and believable, making you feel like you are right there in the middle of the action.
