Review

F. Della Notte opens a door to the rich traditions of old New York in Descent Into Hell, a captivating new novel about the Italian-American experience and the bonds that link us all.
Buddy, an unlikely half-Irish, half-Italian cop in the 1940s, is thrown into his own backyard to tackle a massive crime ring. The powerful family ties of this complex story make for a suspenseful tangle, while the relentless pace of the story will keep you gripped to the very end. As one might expect, it isn't long before his new career and his own blood clash violently, but this novel also boasts delicate, thoughtful scenes of grief, self-reflection, and familial love.
While the plot is dramatic and gripping, the colloquial dialogue can be inconsistent, and the first-person narrative voice sometimes tells more than shows. There is a rough-around-the-edges authenticity to the prose, however, and the brusque tone one expects in the Big Apple.
Despite the time period, the story feels relevant to today, an age of desperation and tough decisions, where people feel guided by instinct and guts, just like Buddy and his generation, touching on relatable ideas of family loyalty, our ever-shifting moral compass, and the murky waters of justice. All told,
Descent Into Hell is a well-balanced character study with plenty of action, humor, and surprising turns, and a fiery, New York slice of life.

“Descent into Hell” by F. Della Notte takes the reader back in time to the era right after World War II. Our protagonist, Buddy, just got out of the war and is living in New York City. He thinks that since he’s already seen the worst of what humanity has to offer, a career as a police officer would be the next sensible step. His half-Italian, half-Irish background opens a lot of doors for him in that time period, but he finds himself facing off with the big mob bosses in his undercover career. He gets to work with the FBI, but his spidey-sense is telling him there’s something not quite right with the job he’s assigned to, and when he has to get deep in the action, he uncovers a plot that takes him into the pits of both government hell and the lowest levels of the street, where he’s in danger from the good guys and the bad guys and isn’t sure who he can trust. Who thought the war ended just because World War II was over?

This book by F. Della Notte takes you back to 1946. Readers will meet Buddy, a World War II veteran who thinks he has seen it all. When he returns home, he decides to follow his dream of being a police officer in New York and signs up to be on the force.

Buddy is assigned to various tasks, including one that involves the FBI. He is assigned to a jewel and drug smuggling problem along with three other co-workers. As they try to figure out who is behind this crime, Buddy discovers that not all is what it seems and that the mafia is more than likely after him. He also starts to wonder about his superiors and whether they are compromised.

This is a great read for those who enjoy crime thrillers. It features numerous well-developed characters as well as plenty of plot twists that will surprise you. You might even learn some interesting facts about New York City during this time.

A must read thriller that combines action, suspense and humour. This gripping novel is set in New York in the mid 40’s and presents the Italian- American cop Buddy as the main character. Buddy along with two other young cops are assigned a dangerous task by the FBI. As the plot unfolds there are many twists that make the narration absorbing.

This riveting crime novel is written by Della Note. I am really fond of her writing style as she uses the right words to create suspenseful and captivating scenes. The dialogues, the descriptions and the story being told by the main protagonist make the narrative authentic, realistic and riveting.

I recommend this action packed story to readers of all ages. Descent into Hell is a five star novel that it is worth reading!

“Descent Into Hell” by F. Della Notte is an exceptionally well-written book that I have to admit, I unexpectedly enjoyed. The plotline is plain and simply a cut-above-the-rest, the characters are believable, and the writing style itself is stylized in a manner that is perfect for the time that the storyline is set (post-WWII). This book has a combination of a little bit of everything making it the perfect read for fans of varying genres. In other words, regardless of what you are into (reading-wise) this book has something in store for everyone. I’m definitely looking forward to Notte’s upcoming book, set to hit late-2021!

“Descent Into Hell” by F. Della Notte is an organized crime thriller that checks all the essential boxes for this genre. If the title seems intense, it is because it is. The gripping storyline is fast-paced and packed with elements of action and danger. There is some sprinkling of humor and wit throughout the book too. Author F. Della Notte did a great job at making sure the story is engaging as much as it is just a few degrees away from reality. Reading this was enough to make me curious about the author’s other works. Fans of mafia and crime books would definitely enjoy this one.

After reading F. Della Notte’s first two books in the Housekeeper Series, I’m Gonna Kill That Cat,” and “Catwalk Dead,” I became an instant fan, and waiting with anticipation for the next book in the Series to come out in 2021.

“Decent Into Hell,” is different from her previous books, in the fact she reveals in detail, the characters involved and their part in the story. The element of surprise is, you do not know how all the charters really relate to each other. Even when you think you have it figured out you are very much mistaken. The Author takes you back in time when the main character, Buddy, is living in New York, right after World War II. He becomes a police officer and is assigned to work with the FBI, his Italian/Irish roots being an asset to the FBI. Think again!! Buddy finds himself dealing with the mob and also discovers the government is not exactly the good guys, putting him in a very dangerous position. This is another well written book by Notte and as with her previous books, an easy read, page turner and one you can’t put down with a very surprising ending. Would highly recommend it.

I loved the historical detail about this thriller, which was authentic and credible. It is a story about getting mixed up with the mob – something very easy to do if you are in New York and are of Italian descent. Buddy, the main protagonist, is half-Italian and half-Irish. In the immediate aftermath of World War II, he realised his dreams to become a cop with the NYPD. In this story, he is given a special assignment, which brings him into direct conflict with the mob and causes great danger to his family. Fast-paced and gripping!
