4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 760 ratings

Sometimes the past refuses to remain buried.

Salem, Massachusetts, has built a thriving industry of tourism on the foundations of its dark past. But, beneath the seaside charm, bewitching shops, and seasonal surge of witches and thrill-seekers, the ancient darkness still lurks.

When Skye purchases an historic house in Salem, she steps into a world of ancient magick as her arrival triggers a series of shocking events. Her dormant powers surface the night she stumbles on a hidden room in her new home and uncovers a skeleton, a cloth-wrapped knife, and an ancient journal.

Unbeknownst to Skye, her family’s past is interwoven with the darkness and as she struggles with her newfound powers, the malevolent force that has haunted Salem for centuries stirs and begins a rampage of blood and death.

Haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his mother during a ritual three decades ago, local police officer Jerome Phips, is shocked when he learns the skeleton found belongs to his mother. Bound by a shared destiny, Skye and Jerome must unravel the dark secrets of Salem’s past and defeat the dark force that threatens to destroy Salem.

In this spellbinding tale of destiny and the eternal battle between light and darkness, Skye must learn to embrace her birth task, while Jerome struggles with the ghosts of his past.

Will they succeed, or will the town once again fall prey to the shadows that lurk beneath the surface?

About the Author

Books have fueled my imagination since reading the Black Stallion series when I was younger. Never thinking that I could actually write a book, I sat down and began anyway. I now have 5 published books and more on the way, all of them with a theme of myths, legends, romance or fantasy.

I am fortunate enough to live on a farm filled with animals to love and care for. Every morning I am greeted at the barnyard by dogs, cats, goats, and horses and time spent with all of them helps motivate me to write.

I also design book covers for various genres. There are premades available on my website and I do custom covers for clients who want a more personalized cover.

Well crafted, suspenseful, captivating! I believe the author accomplished what any good storywriter sets out to do. She transported me, the reader, out of the humdrum of reality into a unique world where I could escape my everyday problems. My senses were reeling with the delightful words that expressed tension and the gamut of emotions.

I don't usually read fantasies; I read historical fiction and coming-of-age stories. But this one drew me in with the descriptive language, and I was at once immersed in a story I could not put down such were the cliff hangers. I guess one could consider it to be historical fiction. Even though I don't have knowledge of the Salem Witch trials, I know it was based on them. I bet the author did a fair amount of research in order to portray believable characters that knew how to practice their craft.

This is also a story of love, mercy, forgiveness, and coming to terms with your past.

Brilliant! Thank you, Cathy.

Witches. What can I say but that they always fascinate me...fantasies that they are. Some of my maternal ancestors lived in Salem before and during the time of the trials ...so Salem is n added bonus in a book about witches for me.

This book held my interest; well paced with a bevy of interestingly designed characters there was nothing I did not enjoy.

Light reading? Yes, surely! Entertaining and easy reading? Yes! Just what I needed as a fun diversion while Covid lockdowns continue for awhile longer. I am looking forward to reading Book 2.

From the first paragraph, I was hooked. I didn’t want to put the book down, and it’s one of those books that took more time because I wanted to read every word. I didn’t want to miss anything!

Skye Temple has purchased a house in Salem, Mass, having been drawn to the house. On a whim. Having returned to town to pick up the keys, where she meets a few townspeople, she learns that she’s purchased Sarah Good’s house, one of the women who was hanged during the Salem witch trials.

While she knows she has powers, she has no idea to the extent of those powers. She has promised her mother that she would never use her powers without her mother’s presence. While Skye doesn’t count buying a house without her mother’s knowledge as breaking that promise, when she starts having strange visions, unlike ever before and then finds a woman’s skeleton behind a secret door in her library that she instinctively went to, she realizes she could be in danger. Only now, she can’t seem to make contact with her mother.

Each chapter is a page turner, with a cast of witching characters. Why not? We’re in Salem, after all. While I thought I knew who the villain was early on, I kept changing my mind as events unfolded. I’m known to go to the end of a book to read the ending and then analyze the writing as I finish a book, but not this time. I wanted to be surprised.

If I were able, I’d be giving this book more than the five I’m allowed. Well done!

Salem, MA is one of my favorite places to visit. So as soon as I read that this story is based from there, I just had to read it. This book did not disappoint. It's mysteriously thrilling. Ir was great to see Skye and Jerome grow into their powers and come together. I loved that it was based with actual history. Can't wait to read what comes next.

Really? Where the hell is Skye's backbone? Grow a freaking lady pair!!!! Ignore your gut and let everyone walk all over you? She deserves it for being so stupid! Dear god it's like those cheesy 80's horror movies where the dumb chick always ignores reason and goes down into the basement. *smacks forehead*

Having visited Salem almost 20 times in the last 25 years, and as a practicing witch, I thought all stories involving Salem were told. Wrong! Cathy Walker's imagination created as entertaining story around such rich history. I finished this book is 24 hours (when I should have been working). It was the perfect book to get into the mood of the coming fall and maybe another trip to Salem. I know her stories will be those to go to when you need a quick read to get your heart pumping and transport you into a place of magic and love. Well done Cathy.

Salem , Massachusetts is well known as a "witchy" place . Skye Temple was drawn to a house there that she purchased as if on impulse . She knew she and her mother had powers, but was not prepared for what was to come . Goodness usually prevails over evil , and her mother ended up beside her. So did Jerome , a local cop. Almost a thriller .
Many typos and some awkward writing .

This was quite an enjoyable read, with magic, ancient evil, and family bloodlines all coming together in an intriguing novel. The language was beautiful, and the two main characters well fleshed out. There is some blood and gore, but nothing that detracted me from reading. Overall, a solid and entertaining read.
