3.3 3.3 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

“There were some rather gruesome details to the affair—Jesus Christ—I am not even referring to the cannibalism, for in my mind, at this time, it seems somehow mundane, somehow…quaint, for lack of a better word. How far gone am I…?” –Edward Webb Hawkins, The Brazil Business

TRAVEL along that razor’s edge separating horror and fantasy.

EXPLORE the desolate New England wilds where a woman of will and wit collides against a monstrosity of tooth and claw.

DESCEND into the depths of the earth where dark things die and rise again.

TRACE the steps of a famed jungle explorer lost to the wilds, and pray his fate is not your own.

ROAM the labyrinthine corridors of the criminal mind and experience terrors known only to killers and to the men who stalk them.

INVESTIGATE the back alleys and plague walls of Mortise Locke, the Machine City, the last bastion of mankind in all its glory, honor, and depravity.

BURN RUBBER through the streets of Old Mexico City, where the pyramids stand in vestigial homage to blood-hungry gods long since rotted away to dust, or have they…?

SEVEN TALES that will take you places you never knew existed, places you never knew you wanted to go, places you’ll hunger to return to.

Review

"GrimNoir excelled as a horror anthology. I would recommend it to anybody who likes horror fiction." -Cameron Kobes kobescwrites93.wordpress.com

From the Author

Dear Reader,     GrimNoir comprises seven short stories I wrote after the birth of my son. To those who aren't new parents and haven't experienced the process, it can be overwhelming in many ways. One of the ways is time availability. Writing went out the window for me. I had started two separate novels and failed at both.     So I decided to stick with short stories for a time. These stories are the result of that decision.     They kept me moving forward as a writer when time constraints threatened otherwise.     I hope you enjoy them.Kevin Wright

About the Author

Kevin Wright studied writing at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell and fully utilized his bachelor’s degree by seeking and attaining employment first as a produce clerk and later as an emergency medical technician and firefighter. His parents were thrilled.

For decades now he has studied a variety of martial arts but steadfastly remains not-tough in any way, shape, or form. He just likes to pay money to get beat up, apparently.

Kevin Wright peaked intellectually in the seventh grade.

He is extremely boring.

He enjoys reading a little bit of everything and writing sci-fi, fantasy, and horror. He does none of it well. Revelations, his debut novel, is a Lovecraftian horror tale. GrimNoir is a collection of his best short stories. Lords of Asylum is an insane grimdark fantasy that received an honourable mention in Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Contest in 2016. The Clarity of Cold Steel, his latest novel, is a lightning-paced steampunk detective novel. Kevin’s mom really likes all of them even though she’s never read any of them and wonders continually why he can’t just write anything ‘nice.’

Kevin continues to write in his spare time and is currently working on a sequel to Lords of Asylum tentatively entitled, The Hall of the Leper King. It’s romantic comedy.

The writing is good, and I think horror fans will appreciate this book. It lives up to the title; all of the short stories in this volume are unrelentingly grim. But, they are good stories and I was impressed with them. Several different themes and writing styles were exhibited here.

Kevin Wright is a master of the short horror form. This is a collection of eight stories, ranging over various themes and subgenres. From a grim survival tale set on crashed Russian prison transport truck, to a gloriously dark and imaginative steampunk detective story in "Slum Chutney" and "The Dead Empty," a pulse pounding, adrenaline fueled episode in the life of an ambulance crew caught up in a dark force of ancient terror, a historical take as a Native American woman caught between terrors of the Old World and the New in the time of King Philip's War to a clever twist in "Steel at Dawn," finally culminating in a respectful homage to H P Lovecraft in "The Brazil Business," in which he actually manages to pull of the epistolary, this is an intoxicating smorgasbord of horror.

This is a terrific sample of what he can do, and a great choice for any horror enthusiast.

Ridiculously hard to follow.

Grimnoir is a fantastic conglomeration of short stories, all surrounding various people's brushes with evil. The breadth of the settings and characters is something that really stands out here. From prisoners on the frontier of Siberia, to a witch hunter in the King Phillip's War in the 1600's, to an ambulance crew in modern day encountering evil in what could be your very own backyard...

This book starts strong and keeps going, delivering in many different ways, though all tied to the dark and evil things that lie in wait for those bold enough to look or foolish enough...

Pick this book up, you won't regret it. Wright is a great new author, I've read several of his offerings and this is his best yet!

An unsung talent here in New England, Kevin Wright's 'Grimnoir' collection exhibits a versatility previously unread. Able to shift between cultures and subgenres almost at will and deliver impact in all of them, these stories range from classic Lovecraftian style horror, unique historical mercenary 'punk' set in an alternate India, and a dash of grim humor in some of my favorite selections, 'Steel at Dawn' and 'The Beast'. Prose is great, in particular the dialog, and memorable characters abound. Thematically this is likely to appeal to both the classic horror fan, gritty steampunkers, and the grimdark fantasy fan, and shall serve to tide us over until his 'Lords of Asylum' historical fantasy is released!

The second book from author Kevin Wright that I have read and I must say that I loved it. My favorite tales from this horror anthology include, Steel at Dawn, The Beast and Slum Chutney. Ranging in tone from lighthearted to horrifying, Kevin knows how to keep things interesting and gives each character a distinct personality and clever dialogue. A great read from start to finish!

This collection of short stories was very well thought out and written even better. His writting style reminds me of a combination between Wes Craven and Jim Butcher. I enjoyed the read immensely and look foward to more books authored by Kevin Wright!
