Deep Shadow (The Deep Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
In the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, something lethal is on the move.
Scuba divers travel from all over the world to visit the little island of Bonaire, with its crystal-clear waters and a host of beautiful marine life. After three years in the “Divers Paradise”, divemaster Boone Fischer thought he’d seen it all; but on a routine afternoon dive, he spots something that will turn his tranquil life upside down.
From the arid shores of the ABC Islands to the tropical jungles of Venezuela—from the ocean depths of the Southern Caribbean, to the lush islands of the Northern Leewards, Deep Shadow takes Boone and the reader on an action-packed adventure filled with danger and suspense.
"The age-old adage of ‘write what you know’ becomes very important when you write about a technical subject like scuba diving. When you get all the details right, and throw in just the right amounts of action, humor, romance, and suspense, you have a novel like this." - Wayne Stinnett, bestselling author of Fallen Out.

Editorial Reviews
Review
Deep Shadow's detailed use of technology, diving and drug trade knowledge made me believe that this author had done his homework. While we learn about regulators, air mixes, active and passive sonar, sub steering controls and much more, I never felt that he was showing off with an information dump that was taking me out of the story. I think a valid comparison might be Peter Benchley's The Deep." - DAVID BECKWITH - KEY WEST CITIZEN & FREE PRESS, Jan 9, 2021
"Every damn sentence in Deep Shadow vibrates with authenticity -- whether it's diving at the edge of an abyss, pushing an open fisherman to its limits in a rough sea, or detailing a claustrophobic smuggler submarine. You can smell the sweat on the bad guys, and the good guys(and girls) never seem contrived. Deep Shadow is accurate, paced like an anxious thoroughbred, and highly entertaining. I can't wait for the next one." - Michael Reisig, bestselling author of The Road to Key Westseries.

"Highly recommended! Nick Sullivan's expert knowledge of deep-sea diving and the Caribbean locale make Deep Shadow a rousing action-adventure thrill ride from start to finish." - Bill Pronzini, bestselling author of The Crimes of Jordan Wise.
"Deep Shadow has it all--Suspense, Thriller... and a little bit of love. Sullivan is obviously a fan of the culture, climate, and diving in the Caribbean. The way he described each island and each dive that they made is painted in this amazing color that I felt like I was there. Overall, Deep Shadow will probably be up there with my Best of 2018 books. 5 out of 5 Stars." - Brian's Book Blog.
"I was immediately drawn into the Clancy-esque storyline, but was equally turned on by the romance at the center. Props to this writer for giving us both a male and female heroine, and a romance that works within and amplifies the storyline. A delicious, sexy, action packed maritime adventure that will keep you turning the pages well into the night!" - Gabra Zackman, author of "The Bod Squad" series.
"If you're planning to island-hop the Caribbean by boat or plane, you couldn't have a better guide than Nick Sullivan, a great storyteller and a spout of knowledge about (to list a few) craft large and small, sea life, scuba diving, weaponry, hydraulics, geography, navigation, island history, food and drink. But he doesn't hit you over the head with the research, and it enhances rather than interrupts the tale." - Peter Johnson, author of Grant's Indian.
"If you are looking for an exceptionally well written and narrated book of adventure, pirates, terrorists, corrupt governments and drug runners, you will be happy when you dive (pun intended) into Deep Shadow, a fulfilling action-packed thriller with depth and dimension." - Quella Reviews.
"Deep Shadow is a thrill ride! You're lazily scuba diving off a tropical reef when the plot grabs you and never lets you go. I predict Boone Fischer and Emily Durand will return to save the day book after book." - Tom Robbins, playwright of The Amish Girl's Guide to Armageddon.
"This story was great. He very clearly knows his (expletive) about these particular islands and his passion shows through the page." - Sam of Will Read for Booze.

About the author

Born in East Tennessee, Nick Sullivan has spent most of his adult life as an actor in New York City, working in theater, television, film, and audiobooks. After recording hundreds of books over the last twenty years he decided to write some of his own. An avid scuba diver for many years, his travels to numerous Caribbean islands have inspired The Deep Series (formerly Caribbean Dive Adventures). "Deep Shadow" is set on the Dutch island of Bonaire and its sequel, "Deep Cut", is set on the little island of Saba. Book Three, "Deep Roots", takes place in Belize, and Book Four, "Deep Devil", takes Boone Fischer and Emily Durand up the coast to Cozumel.

In Deep Shadow, Nick Sullivan’s 1st book of The Deep series, he definitely utilizes the balance & relationships between “good guys” & “bad guys” to form the backbone of this story.
The overall plot & subplots involve Caribbean maritime adventure. Not many surprises along the way, but for sure an engaging, fast paced, humorous, page turner.
Character development is solid. Sullivan does a fabulous job of introducing us to his eclectic cast of characters; backstories included.
None of the relationships are overly complex or pushed beyond the believable.
World building, & all it entails, certainly showcases Sullivan’s mastery of this skill. He is an artist - painting the colorful environs of Deep Shadow via his keyboard.
The phrases, “I felt like I was there,” & “I could picture (& feel, smell, taste, etc…) everything so clearly,” are 100% applicable.
In general, it’s an exciting, tropical, SCUBA leaning, escape to the islands, type of read. With some cartel & other unwelcome surprise “guests” joining in the action. (Or… creating it?? ;)
It’s not an INCREDIBLE story. And I know it won’t really remain in my memory for long.
That said, it is without question, entertaining enough to hook you from the start. Also, I enjoyed it so much I just had to read it in one overnight. And I’ve become invested enough in the storyline, characters, & location to pick up Book 2 immediately following the completion of this review.
So! What am I waiting for?!
What are YOU waiting for?!? ……
I’ll go & grab Book 2 of The Deep series, while you scoop up Deep Shadow, Book 1.
Perhaps you & I will meet again when we’re both starting or reviewing Book 3!? ;)
I’m just that confident in the excitement & enjoyability of this series!
A tale about a SCUBA instructor and divemaster who sees something that he shouldn’t have – and is taken for a ride into the deep and dark world of narco subs and a terrorist plot?
First and foremost – you can tell that this is a love-letter to the Caribbean. Sullivan is obviously a fan (which he does state at the end of the book) of the culture, climate, and diving in the Caribbean. I can also tell that a ton of research (and non-fiction elements) went into Deep Shadow. The way he described each island and each dive that they made is painted in this amazing color that I felt like I was there. I’ve only ever been to Jamaica and I’ve never SCUBA’d before (outside of once in the high school pool). But I felt like I was on these dives with the characters. Sullivan’s expertise allowed me to live it instead of just feel like I was watching it from ashore.
The narco sub that he talks about that plays a major role in the entire novel – weaving itself in and out – hiding in the shadows is based on a real sub – he mentions this at the end of the book too, but I remember hearing about a narco sub that was found in the rivers of South American a couple years ago and I thought that was the craziest thing. I love when an author can weave non-fiction elements (adding to them as they please) with fiction. It makes the story even more believable.
The best part about Deep Shadow is that everything felt incredibly plausible. So much so that I felt like we should be watching out for terrorist plots similar to what Sullivan wrote about. It felt that real. The characters were likable and easy to root for (especially Boone) – you just wanted them to do well and to come out on top.
Overall, Deep Shadow will probably be up there with my Best of 2018 books. I can say this – I hope that Sullivan has more books in this series planned – and I hope that they are all as good as Deep Shadow was. Nick, go back to one of these islands and get inspired for another novel!
And the romantic part seems stilted. I thought Emily was obnoxious, though I don't believe she was supposed to be. She called the protagonist "Rod Everhard", for goodness sake, and other juvenile comments. Are we in 6th grade?
On the other hand, I haven't ever been to the Caribbean. GREAT descriptions. Now at the top of my bucket list.

Look forward to finding that out!

A story backed up by experience and descriptive prose that allows the reader to immerse themselves into this wondrous world. I loved every minute of this story.

The characters are just too much the right person in the right place at the right time to ring true and the plot and storyline are really drawn out overly much to grip you, but the chapters are short which means it is easy to put down and pick up and it is written in third person which is such a relief. There were also a few very juvenile double entendres like 'Rod Everhard' which were supposed to be cutesy but weren't really.
However, this book doesn't really bowl along due to the long geographic desciptions and so on, so if you want a fast paced thriller, then this isn't for you. No typos though and the structure is okay but I can't really give it more than 3 stars.
