Fighting Hearts: A Friends to Lovers steamy sports romance (Hearts So Fine Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 131 ratings

Sparks fly in this friends-to-lovers steamy sports romance when a trauma nurse moves in with an MMA fighter after losing her apartment. As their relationship goes from tepid to tempestuous, they're forced to confront major adversity. Will their passionate bond endure, or will they fight their hearts’ true desires?

Louise...

After a rough year, my life is back on track. I’ve enrolled in school, made a big fat tuition payment, and got a second job teaching martial arts in an MMA gym. Everything’s going according to plan.

Until I lose my apartment.

With an empty bank account and no time to look for a new place, beggars can’t be choosers. So when my best friend warns me that crashing with Madman Markovski might be more than I bargained for, her warnings don’t phase me.

After all, I’ve been around super-fit athletes my entire life. It comes with the territory. And even though Usalv ‘Madman’ Markovski is as hot as they come, I’ve got this...Right?

Usalv...

From the moment we met, Louise has been under my skin. A distraction I don’t need, an itch I can’t scratch. The one woman I can’t have. Because love doesn’t work for me and she won’t settle for anything less. So we’ll stay friends, I’ll help her out, even save her life. But the one thing I won’t do is promise not to break her heart.

This book is a must read! I love the way Annabeth Saryu sets the scene, draws the characters, and builds the plot. First, we are introduced to a gym that trains professional fighters. Top-of-the-line cardio machines, punching bags, and weight-lifting equipment line the long walls while octagon-shaped cages occupy the far corner of the long, rectangular room while the center of the gym provides plenty of space for floor mat work and two boxing rings. Yes, Macedonian immigrant Usalv and trauma nurse Louise are into martial arts big time--he's a world-ranked fighter, and she's a fourth degree black belt. But more important, they are both decent, caring people, trying to make their way in the world despite being haunted by demons from their pasts. And Saryu's first-person, present-tense style gives their story a sharp edge that keeps readers on top of the action and the characters' reactions at the same time so we don't miss a single heart beat or beat down. Bravo!

Usalav is a professional MMA fighter who has a laser focus on his career. He has been through a lot after leaving his family at age 15 to come to the states and live with his Uncle. When he meets Louise aka Lou who comes to teach at his gym they have an awkward first encounter.
These two start off as friends with an attraction . He has her move into his apartment when she is need of housing . They quickly go on a line of friends and lovers.
Yet petty things, assumptions and Mia communication keep them from reaching where they both want be.
This author did a great job researching MMA and nursing. The characters were likable in their ways but their immaturity at a mature age.
Enjoyed the dual POV and the epilogue. Liked the MMA scenes.
I am volunteering to leave a review for this book.

Annabeth Saryu, ‘Fighting Hearts’.
A friend to lovers steamy sport romance.

As an Hidden Gems ARC reader I received a free copy and promised an honest review. Here it is.

Rating: 3 (of 5 stars).

In general: Complicated love life of a MMA fighter.

Main characters:
- Usalv Markovski.
He’s born in Macedonia and came as a kid to Chicago. Now he’s a professional MMA fighter .

- Louise Becker.
She’s a trauma nurse and in her free time a black belt taekwondo and kickboxing instructor in a fight gym.

Usalv and Lou meet in the gym when he helps her out of an unfortunate situation. They like and respect each other. When she has to leave her apartment Usalv helps her again and they become temporary roommates and both feel a strong physical attraction.
Then the author, Annabeth Saryu, describes how they fall in love but especially Usalv has problems with a lasting commitment due to bad experiences in his past. And that causes a lot of confused feeling in Louise.
However in the end they find their HEA.
The author created wonderful main characters and interesting boxing scenes but left me with some questions about the plot:
- How is it possible that a black belt taekwondo instructor and equivalent sparring partner of a MMA fighter cannot defend herself against a harassing young man?
- How is it possible to pick up a person who wanders randomly in Chicago for half an hour?
- How is it possible that intelligent persons who love, trust and care for each other never clearly speak about their real mutual feelings for such a long time? And make reaching a HEA so complicated?
Nevertheless for me an interesting book to read.

I really liked this book. I thought it was going to be same & average type of book when I first started it. Glad I gave it a shot & didn’t finish it. I’m pleasantly surprised this book wasn’t all about sex but I was a little taken back about the huge penis size. It might of been over the top but it worked in some bizarre way. I look forward to the next book in this series. Even more by this author.

I really liked that Louise was into martial arts and could kick @$$! I found Usalav to be sweet and sometimes awkward, but overall I found him completely endearing. There were some major communication issues between them, but my heart pretty much broke after reading Usalav’s reasoning.
My only criticism is that the ending felt rushed, and also that if Paul was able to go to a welcome home party at a pub/bar, why would he need a hospital bed?!? Otherwise, this was a really good, entertaining read!

This was an enjoyable and compelling read, the characters have depth and are well developed. Annabelle Saryu, has done her research and the medical aspects are accurately incorporated into the story. I immediately purchased the next book in this series following this one.
