After the Sky: (Spirits of the Earth Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 246 ratings

The meek have not inherited the earth.

The world isn't how they left it. When the bunker airlocks release them after twenty years in hibernation, the survivors find a silent, barren world outside. But they are not alone. There is a presence here, alive in the dust—spirits of the earth, benevolent and malicious as they interact with the human remnant.

Milton is haunted by a violent past he's unable to escape, despite the superhuman speed the spirits give him.

Not interested in bearing the next generation, Daiyna is determined to destroy the flesh-eating mutants lurking in the dark, pierced by her night-vision.

Luther is a man of conviction who believes the Creator has offered humankind a second chance, yet he's uncertain they deserve it—and he's perplexed by the talons that flex out of his fingers.

Willard is a brilliant engineer-turned-soldier who refuses to leave his bunker, afraid of becoming infected and willing to destroy any obstacle in his way.

As their lives collide, the mysteries of this strange new world start unraveling, culminating in the ultimate life-or-death decision one survivor will make for them all.

Don't miss this Post Apocalyptic Adventure with a Paranormal Fantasy twist! It's perfect for fans of Stephen King, T.W. Piperbrook, and The Walking Dead.

Wool Meets WWZ
After the Sky (book 1 in "Spirits of the Earth" series) by Milo James Fowler is pretty darn good. It's a "Post Apocalyptic Tale with a Paranormal Twist" according the publisher, Aethon Books. That's an apt description. I liken it to "The Silos of Wool meets World War Z" - and I'm pretty sure it will appeal to fans of Wool, Stephen King or Dean Koontz, and The Walking Dead.At a nice and solid 400 pages, you'll get to spend some time with this motley crew of heroes - and you'll want to. There are multiple points-of-view and time frames, so the story line takes some paying attention. Fowler is a good plotter, however, and you'll be rewarded with an engrossing tale that will leave you wanting to read the rest of the books in the series. Recommended.(Disclaimer: Yes, I got a free ARC from the publisher, but I also bought it as a pre-order because it was that good, check my Verified Purchase tag! ;-)

AFTER THE SKY, BOOK ONE of Spirits of the Earth series, is one that will stay with you for a long time after you turned the last page to look off into the shadows reflecting on the epic tale you’ve just finished.

But be warned, it will not be finished with you.

It is a suspenseful, grim cautionary speculative fiction that asks the important questions:

WHAT MAKES US HUMAN?

ARE WE MORE THAN OUR PAST?

DOES ISOLATION FESTER THE DARKNESS WITHIN US?

ARE WE COMPELLED BY OUR VERY NATURES TO SELF-DESTRUCT?

Dystopian futures are a reflection of our current fears. We may well arrive in a future not too dissimilar from the one presented in AFTER THE SKY if our leaders are not wiser than our past ones have proven to be.

The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those who speak it. AFTER THE SKY highlights the quandary to that thought: who determines what is THE truth?

The world to this novel is vast in its perspective and scope … which is why the author uses multiple points of view.
One of the key benefits of multiple points of view is the ability to show the reader what multiple characters are thinking and feeling. The reader gains a greater sense of the relationship between the characters and the overall world because they have more perspectives and more data.

The reader then knows more than any one character. This provides the opportunity for the author to create dramatic irony, where the reader thinks “No don’t trust him!” because they know what is behind that man’s easy smile and manner while the character does not. Dramatic irony is a great technique to create tension, suspense, and faster pacing. And Milo uses it expertly.

The story is bigger than any one character, so multiple points of view was needed to get all of the plot points and information to the reader. Seeing into the fractured minds of certain characters was like watching a ticking bomb hidden from the rest of those around him or her.

AFTER THE SKY reveals the truth of who we are and who we may become. But beware: truth revealed is like lighting a match; it can bring light to your world … or burn your fingers.

I truly enjoyed this novel. Pick it up and find yourself swept up into a tale you will not be able to put down.

New and different ideas about humanity's future in a very readable way. A bit wordy but not too bad. First book of the series.

After Sky: (Spirits of the Earth Book 1) of 3 by Milo James Fowler. This story is definitely unique. Man has finally pushed the button and as you might expect, there are not very many survivors. Twenty years after the bombs have fallen, the fallout shelters automatically spit those inside out to make it on their own. Those left behind were affected in just about every apocalyptic circumstance you can imagine, and then some. I did have a hard time getting thru enough of the book to want to finish it. The reason behind the weirdness going on was to vague at first (and frustrating), but it was worth it in the end. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

There are always survivors. Some have humanity and some do not. And then there are those that go to the next level. Enjoy!

Full disclosure - I was provided an advanced reader’s copy of this book by the author, but have voluntarily provided a review. All opinions are my own. I have purchased a paperback copy after reading and look forward to the next installment.

The not-perfect: The story starts off rather slowly and it takes time to connect with the viewpoint character. This is the main reason I could not go to five stars here. Once we get past that issue, the story and characters do sink their talons into me and hold my interest quite nicely.

The good: Themes explored here are important ones, and we see each from different angles. Gender, Faith, Human-ness, Self vs Social survival. Yes, the delivery is a little "heavy-handed" in places, but that meshes well with the quasi-superhero ethos at work. We anticipate a black and white exploration of ethic in such a book, but I found there to be sufficient gray to push the novel above similar attempts I've read. I was also pleased to see the scope of the novel expand as we reached the end of this book. There is plenty left to explore in future installments.

It's definitely worth a read if you're into post-apocalypse with Christian values. I'm an atheist myself, but I enjoyed that aspect of the book. I appreciate seeing a world through different perspective. Onward to Spirits of the Earth Book 2!

This book reveals a world after doomsday where people who’ve been in bunkers for twenty years finally emerge. What each finds in this new world of ash and sand is not what they were prepared to see. Each has a gift and a purpose.

A very unique "world" after at least North America has been destroyed by nuclear weapons and bioweapons. The characters are great if not a bit bizarre. I look forward to reading the next book.

on the getting out into a devastated world after the bombs fell. I found this a refreshingly new approach on what people will experience when finally getting out of the bunkers after the long period of isolation that the scientists deemed nessessary evading fallout.
The experiences of the people in those bunkers are told as memories by different characters, which tells various happenings and you feel for them. What I found unique and captivating is that people find soon the new environment is changing them, some get amazing gifts like far-sight, super strength and such. However, how they deal with it causes rifts in the groups. Very interesting plot, indeed. It was a thrill ride and I am on to the second book.

“You put us in charge of everything you made. We were unworthy of such responsibility.”
“Our destruction is our own. We can't blame it on anyone else.”
Supremely slick...An excellent first novel, Unpredictable, a different dystopian post apocalyptic thriller, with paranormal exciting events and spiritual beliefs. How twisted we each interpret our religious beliefs, for our own cruel and evil convenience. Faith, hope, hate, dear and paranoia are the order of the day. The different point of views of the main characters makes the reading more fascinating and realistic, morbid at times. Each one fares and adapts in his/hers own way, accepting the reality with resilience and strength, and/or with a frenzy will to submit others. The discovery of “gifted” powers are both a blessing for ones and heresy for others. A very compelling story, a profound in-depth and thought provoking, gritty, cruel as only humans can be, no matter the circumstances, or rather, because of them, it’s not just another dystopian thriller. The development of the storyline is overpowering, unveiling some secrets, a slow but intense reveal of the past government’s decisions, There are still many incognisance unsolved. Full of action, intrigue, mystery, and just enough spine-tingling suspense to keep you turning pages late into the night. An Amazing and unique plot, very original and creative in its imagination. I am impressed and totally hooked to this new series!

I loved this book, loved the way they develop the characters and the spirits of earth concept of good versus Evil and Miltons struggle but really cant stand the length of the chapters, I like 10-15 min chapters it helps break down the book and reading time as I can basically go to a given point, I read mainly at night and chapters in this book are way to long for me some nights 30 - 45 mins long also the flitting about between each characters is a little annoying because of the length of time you spend with each one for example Milton, so if it covers 3-5 each characters each chapter it can be 2-3 hours solid reading before you get back to the same part of the story from Milton's point of view, I cant wait for book two of the series and I am determined to read book 3 also, but hope the 2 sequel books adopt a better way to read them.. Saying all that I am glad I decided to read After the Sky So I gave it 4 stars It would have been 5 stars if it had been easier to read for me..
