Editorial Reviews

Review

"Great character development by the author. Music lovers will enjoy how thoroughly Fleet develops specific things about the music world. Best of all, there is a really good story here--if you can call a stalker good--that will keep readers on their toes. DIVA is a very suspenseful book!" -- Feathered Quill Book Reviews

"Fleet subtitles her new killer thriller a novel of psychological suspense. That's an understatement. Diva centers on a lethal stalker. The dazzling object of his sexual obsession is a talented beauty [and] her all-consuming hunger forfame goes well beyond ambition. None of which means she deserves to beraped and slaughtered. Will Frank Renzi be able to keep thatfrom happening? Fleet takes the answer down to the wire. -- Jan Herman, author of A Talent for Trouble: the Life of Hollywood's Most Acclaimed Director William Wyler

From the Author

DIVA was inspired by an actual stalking case. The victim, another brass player like me, was relentlessly stalked by a deranged man for seven years. She escaped by moving to a different state. Although the stalker in DIVA is quite different, a totally fictitious character, many of the events in the book were drawn from my knowledge of what happened to my brass player friend.

Thus, I have dedicated DIVA to stalking victims everywhere, and especially to my friend A.M., who finally escaped the man who stalked her.

In her travels, Susan Fleet has worn many hats: trumpeter, college professor and music historian. While teaching at Berklee College of Music in Boston, she began killing people. Fictionally, of course! In 2001 she moved to New Orleans, the setting for her award-winning crime thrillers featuring NOPD Homicide Detective Frank Renzi.

Susan Fleet's novel, DIVA, is a cracker of a story, combining the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the gangs which roam the abandoned buildings with the world of classical music, which I love. Belinda Scully, flautist, is being stalked by a maniac and her manager turns to Detective Frank Renzi for assistance; a gang has robbed a store and is intent on wiping out anyone who crosses them. How elements of these two areas of society meet through violence is fascinating.

The subsequent plot is rivetting - fast and furious, the plot doesn't neglect the kinder side of human nature. I'm glad the rabbit survived and presumably got handed into an animal shelter as I can't stand novels in which animals are hurt or worse.

Fleet's main characters are entirely believable. There are no macho apes taking on the whole world or tough, hard-bitten policewoman spurning help in all sides. These are real people fighting an unwinnable war on the one hand, but triumphantly winning on the other - but at what cost?

A stupendous read, thoroughly enjoyed it and shall be buying for more Susan Fleet novels :)

This story will hold your attention from page one to the end. It is a chilling story of how a stalker can really obsess over someone and go on a killing streak at the same time. With "Barry" anyone who does not agree with him, or gets in his way, gets killed. I have read some of the reviews about there being bad language and sex in the story. Well yes there is but one has got to understand that the bad language is from "Barry" almost completely. Yes, his language is also crude, but he is a demented stalker so what do you expect, gentleman manners?

Except for some typos, this story is well written, flows smoothly, and is easy to understand. The story is rough in the sense it is depicting a stalker/killer, but it s fairly accurate in how they can get and the stress the detectives go through during a case. For Frank Renzi, he can't rest easy until he catches the bad guy.

The characters are well written, real, and easy to understand, except of course for :Barry". I can never understand why someone like that does what he does.

Belinda is a very talented flutist. She is a Diva and her career is her main reason for living. She is famous world wide, but fame can be dangerous. An armed ex-military man is after her. This stalker will do anything it takes to have her, blackmail, kidnapping, or murder. All this he does in the name of 'love'. When Belinda rejects him, he is stunned and vows revenge. He kidnaps her and terrorizes her. Detective Renzi must find Belinda and save her. Can he do it?

As I said above, there is very bad language and sex in this story, but I do recommend it highly. I feel it is an accurate depiction of what goes on with a stalker and what police go through. It also shows what the victim goes through.

I would recommend it for ages 18 on up.

This is the second novel I have read by Susan Fleet, and I am so thrilled to have found this author. Her books are mysteries, but are deeper, more insightful, than most mysteries. The two that I have read - "Diva" and "Natalie's Revenge" are quite different, but both create interesting, flawed, realistic characters, and allow us to get to know them. Sometimes more than is comfortable! Diva is set in post Katrina New Orleans, and that adds almost another character. We see neighborhoods that were left empty or nearly so by the storm, and the shattered police department trying to cope with increasing crime rates. This is the back drop to the main story of a concert musician being stalked. The tension is always simmering, and Ms. Fleet keeps the pacing varied enough that it never seems cartoonish - the threat is there, but regular daily life continues on. A great read.

The story was good and it was plotted well, and fans of this genre will likely enjoy reading this book. Fleet does a good job with character development, and I especially enjoyed getting to know Frank Renzi. However, I found myself distracted by the number of typos. A character named Rachael was introduced about midway through the story, and she was referred to alternately as Rachael and as Rachel, sometimes within the same paragraph. This type of error could have easily been caught if an editor, or even a handful of beta readers, had proofed the book first. This book has been published more than two years ago and still is riddled with errors, which is really a shame because as a writer, the author has talent. I had read her first book and liked it a lot, and thought I'd read this one - it was free on the day I got it - and if it measured up to the first book, then I'd buy the next one. Well, it didn't and I wouldn't spend money on the next one!

Another great read by Susan Fleet. The story is compelling and the twists and turns held my attention. Great plot, I couldn't put it down. The perfect fast-paced Thriller. This is one of the best books I have read in the past year. Please add this to your list. An excellent Police Procedural story about a deranged stalker. I am now a big fan of the Detective Frank Renzi Series. I read Absolution first, and at the end of DIVA there is a sample of Natalie, which is the 3rd book of the Detective Frank Renzi Series to be released this summer. I look forward to reading more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric and often chilling

This is the 2nd in Susan Fleet's Frank Renzi novels and both the authors writing and the character have developed enormously.

Diva is a great story centred around a classical flautists and her ‘celebrity stalker’. Fleet really manages to get into the mind of the stalker, has a strong character in Frank Renzi and paints a fascinating picture of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

The result is a tense, chilling and in places erotic thriller.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable, well written book which almost got 5 stars

I've just written a review of another book (called Ctrl-Alt-Delete) which starts with two separate story lines both of which are so uninteresting that I struggled to bother to find out if they were interwoven or not. In fact the book is so badly written that I gave up on it before the 10% mark.

I mention this because, strangely enough, the book I moved on to from that, DIVA, also started with two separate storylines. However, DIVA's storylines are gripping and beautifully interwoven and I found myself hooked from Page One.

DIVA is a well-written novel and, with one exception, has interesting, believable characters. The exception? Well, to be honest, I'm getting a bit tired of 'baddies' with 'Special Ops' training and/or seriously weird childhoods, and there's one of those here who encompasses both clichés. I've knocked off one star for that.

My first book by this author, but definitely not my last.
This is a fabulous read..a clever developement of two seemingly unrelated storylines which continually intertwined.
Superbly drawn characters, both 'goodies' and 'baddies', made the whole story very plausible and keep the reader hooked to the final page.
Now I'm about to download the other Frank Renzi books and am looking forward to reading them.
Totally recommended.

Set in post-Katrina New Orleans this thriller interweaves two storylines to great effect.
The major plot line involves Belinda Scully, an internationally reknowned flute player, who is being plagued by a stalker.
This is the second book in the Detective Frank Renzi series. I read this book first and whilst this did not spoil my enjoyment I understand that the character has been developed since book 1. There is something to be said for reading a series in order.
I found this book intelligent, fast paced and interesting. The characters had depth and there was a romance thrown in for good measure.
A great read!
